Circumcision is an operation to remove the skin (foreskin) covering the head (glans) of the penis. In adults, it is a treatment option for phimosis, the inability to retract the foreskin from the glans of the penis. Phimosis may interfere with urination and erection. Circumcision is also a treatment option for balanoposthitis, or inflammation of the foreskin and glans, that is recurrent or has failed to respond to other treatments.
